HDB Storage Ideas: Making a Small Flat Work

Storage is the problem almost every Singapore flat renovation is really trying to solve. Floor area is fixed, families accumulate, and the difference between a flat that feels calm and one that feels cramped is usually storage design rather than square metres.

Think in vertical metres, not square metres

The single biggest win in an HDB flat is building carpentry to the ceiling. Most flats have generous floor-to-ceiling height and most off-the-shelf furniture stops well short of it. Full-height wardrobes and tall units convert dead air into usable storage without taking another centimetre of floor.

Storage that earns its place, room by room

Entryway

A full-wall system that combines display, concealed storage and the TV usually outperforms separate furniture pieces in a compact flat. Keep the lower two-thirds closed and the upper third open so the wall does not feel heavy.

What HDB’s rules mean for storage

Two constraints matter most. The household shelter cannot be hacked or tiled, and there are limits on what may be fixed to it — so it is designed around, not built into. The honest trade-off

Built-in storage is the most effective solution and the least flexible one. Carpentry is fixed: it cannot move with you and it is expensive to change. Build in what you are confident about — entry, kitchen, wardrobes — and stay flexible where your needs may change, such as a child’s room or a study.
