BEDROOM RENOVATION SINGAPORE
Bedroom Renovation for HDB and Condo Homes
Bedroom renovation is mostly carpentry and layout — wardrobes, platform storage, lighting — but HDB still has rules where it counts: platform installations come with height and window-safety limits, combining rooms needs a permit, and a space with gas pipes can never become a bedroom. FC Interior Design has built Singapore bedrooms since 1990 as an HDB-approved contractor, designing around those rules from the first sketch rather than discovering them mid-renovation.

WHAT TO TAKE NOTE
What HDB Allows in a Bedroom Renovation
Three rules matter most in Singapore bedrooms.

Platform Beds Have Rules
A hardwood platform needs no permit, but HDB’s guidelines are specific: the room should have at least 2.4m of height, the void beneath the platform must not be sealed up with cement or used for storage, the platform’s sides must be sealed, and there must be at least 1 metre from the top of the platform to the window sill or parapet — a fall-safety rule that decides where a platform can go. Combining Rooms Needs a Permit
Knocking through a wall to merge two bedrooms — or carve out a walk-in wardrobe — is permit work. Wall demolition or alteration may only start after HDB’s approval, reinforced-concrete elements need a Professional Engineer to supervise, and any new partition creating a habitable room must keep natural lighting, ventilation and a direct fire-escape route. We map which of your walls are structural before promising any layout.
What Cannot Become a Bedroom
HDB does not allow gas pipe terminations or gas appliances in sleeping areas, and a space containing gas pipes cannot be converted into a bedroom — the relevant rule for anyone eyeing a flexi or utility space as an extra room. Wardrobe and panel carpentry also has its own fine print: fasteners into walls are limited to 6mm diameter and 40mm depth, and drilling should respect the concealed pipe runs HDB provides layout plans for.
OUR METHODOLOGY
How We Renovate a Bedroom, Step by Step
Bedrooms are carpentry-led — measurement and wiring come before anything is built.
1. Initial Consultation
We measure the room, window positions and ceiling height, and check which walls are structural before any layout is drawn.
2.Detailed Design Exploration
Carpentry and platforms need no HDB permit; wall changes do — we confirm the scope and file the application as an HDB-approved contractor where needed.
3. Personalised Design Concepts
Wardrobe internals, platform dimensions and lighting are designed within HDB’s limits — including the 1-metre window-safety rule for platforms.
4. Expectations & Actionables
Any approved wall works come first, then wiring runs are planned and completed before carpentry closes them in.
5. Meticulous Implementation
Wardrobes, platforms, panelling and lighting are built and installed, with fixings kept within HDB’s fastener limits.
6. Customer Satisfaction
Alignment, soft-close hardware, switches and finishing are checked with you at handover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an HDB permit to renovate my bedroom?
Carpentry, wardrobes and platforms need no permit. Demolishing or altering walls does, and reinforced-concrete elements need a Professional Engineer’s supervision. We confirm what applies and file it as an HDB-approved contractor.
Can I install a platform bed in an HDB flat?
Yes, without a permit — but HDB’s guidelines say the void beneath must not be sealed with cement or used for storage, the sides must be sealed, and at least 1 metre must remain between the platform top and the window sill.
Can I combine two bedrooms into one?
Only with HDB’s approval before work starts. Non-structural walls can be removed under permit; reinforced-concrete elements need a Professional Engineer to supervise.
Can I turn my study or flexi space into a bedroom?
Not if it contains gas pipes — HDB does not allow spaces with gas pipes to become sleeping areas. A habitable room also needs natural light, ventilation and a direct escape route.
What should I know about built-in wardrobes?
Wall fixings are limited to 6mm diameter and 40mm depth, and drilling should avoid the concealed water-pipe runs. We plan wardrobe carpentry around the services, and wiring is completed before the carcass goes in.
Who carries out the work?
HDB renovation works must be done by contractors in HDB’s Directory of Renovation Contractors. FC Interior Design is an HDB-approved contractor building Singapore bedrooms since 1990 — call +65 6444 0555 or WhatsApp +65 9888 2723.
